For this project, I worked with the ideas shared with me by a game design student working on a horror game that involves Incan mythology.
Supay is the god of death and is often associated with miners as he is known to dwell in caves. In addition to being a shapeshifter, his natural form is a combination of various animalistic and human characteristics. There is a popular dance named the Diablada (or 'Danza de Los Diablos', which means ‘Dance of the Devils’) in which dancers dress up in a Supay-inspired suit and mask.
For my character design, I wanted to combine the animalistic characteristics of the mythology with the gold and red emphasis in the Diablada attire. Furthermore, I wanted to add a bit more mystery to the character by having it wear a skull with horns that traditionally symbolize the Devil.
This was my first time diving into Incan mythology, and it was an absolute pleasure to work with Lexi!
